The Last Broadcast Documentary

Summer Wallace is the creator and producer of the Modern Works Festival at Urbanite Theatre. The Modern Works Festival is a national playwriting contest, reading festival and celebration of women in theatre. In their inagural year (2018) they received over 100 play submissions. In 2019, over 300 women and female identifying playwrights submitted work, including numerous students for our student contest. Three finalists and one student finalist were selected and brought to Florida for a week to workshop their scripts with professional actors, directors and dramaturgs. A reading of each play is performed for the public who then votes on one winner.  The winning playwright receives a $3000 honorarium. In addition to the workshops and readings, they interview professional playwrights about their experiences in the field. Past writers include Martyna Majok (Cost of Living, Ironbound) and Lauren Yee (The Great Leap, Cambodian Rock Band).

“Urbanite has always been very conscientious of having equal opportunities for male and female performers. We’re doing our part, but we thought we could do more — we could be a leader in the community producing female works.”- Summer Wallace
